RaceOne Begins Its Formula Vee Journey at Zwartkops
Vin Naiker makes his official racing debut in the RaceOne #88 JForce
RaceOne officially began its South African motorsport journey at Zwartkops Raceway on 12 September 2026, with Vin Naiker taking to the grid for his first competitive Formula Vee race in the #88 JForce.
RaceOne is a developing South African motorsport team built around a passion for racing, technical excellence and continuous driver development. The team brings together the expertise of Gouws Motorsport, the engineering heritage of JForce and the support of its major partners: 24Solutions Technology, House of Heirs and the Advanced Technology Centre of Excellence – Institute of Business & Technology.
For Vin, the weekend represented the fulfilment of a long-held ambition and the beginning of a new chapter.

Sitting on the grid in the #88 JForce, surrounded by experienced Formula Vee drivers, made me realise that the dream had finally become real. There is still a great deal to learn, but that is exactly what makes this journey so exciting.”
The RaceOne #88 JForce
At the heart of RaceOne’s Formula Vee programme is the #88 JForce, designed and engineered by Johan Gouws Senior.
Johan’s knowledge, practical engineering ability and years of experience in South African motorsport are reflected throughout the car. The JForce was developed specifically for the demands of Formula Vee racing, combining a lightweight single-seater chassis with precise handling and Volkswagen-based mechanical components governed by the category’s technical regulations.
The car is prepared and supported by Gouws Motorsport, whose team provides the technical expertise required to ensure that the #88 is safe, reliable and competitive.
For a new driver, that support is invaluable. Every session produces information about braking, tyre performance, suspension setup, driver inputs and overall vehicle behaviour. Johan and the Gouws Motorsport team translate that feedback into practical setup improvements while helping Vin develop a better understanding of the car.
The relationship between driver and engineer is one of the most important elements of motorsport. RaceOne’s first weekend demonstrated how experience in the pits can help build confidence and performance on the circuit.
A Challenging Introduction to Zwartkops
Zwartkops Raceway is a demanding circuit that rewards accuracy, confidence and consistency. Its combination of technical corners, elevation changes, fast sections and heavy braking zones provides very little time for a driver to relax.
For Vin, the weekend was about gaining experience, understanding the JForce under competitive conditions and learning how to manage race starts, traffic, braking points and racing lines while surrounded by an experienced field.
Every lap presented another opportunity to improve.
Formula Vee places the emphasis firmly on the driver. With closely controlled mechanical specifications and limited aerodynamic assistance, competitors cannot simply rely on additional horsepower or advanced technology.
Momentum, racecraft, mechanical sympathy and consistency are essential. A small mistake through one corner can affect a driver’s speed throughout the next section of the circuit.
This is what makes Formula Vee such a respected driver-development category. It teaches drivers to carry speed, brake accurately, understand weight transfer and compete wheel-to-wheel with discipline.
Welcomed by the Formula Vee Family
One of the strongest impressions from Vin’s first race weekend was the welcoming culture of the Formula Vee Association.
From the moment he entered the paddock, experienced drivers, officials, mechanics and Association members were willing to offer advice and assistance. Despite the intensity of the competition on the circuit, the atmosphere in the paddock was supportive, accommodating and family-orientated.
Vin expressed his appreciation to Formula Vee Association Chairman Theodore Vermaak for the important role he continues to play in welcoming new competitors and protecting the future of the category.
“Theodore and the Formula Vee Association made me feel welcome from the beginning. Entering motorsport for the first time can be intimidating, but the Association went out of its way to accommodate me, answer my questions and help me understand the racing environment. You quickly realise that Formula Vee is more than a championship—it is a motorsport family.”
Theodore is not only Chairman of the Association but also an active Formula Vee competitor and former Association champion. His leadership reflects the hands-on character of the category: the people responsible for guiding the series are deeply connected to its cars, drivers and history.
Together with its committee and members, the Formula Vee Association works to coordinate the championship, support competitors and preserve the category as a sustainable entry point into South African single-seater racing.
More Than Six Decades of Motorsport Heritage
Formula Vee racing began in South Africa in May 1965 and has remained an important part of the country’s motorsport landscape for more than six decades.
Few racing categories can claim such a long and continuous contribution to South African circuit racing. Vin’s first race at Zwartkops was only the opening chapter of the RaceOne Formula Vee programme.
The immediate objective is development: improving lap times, gaining confidence in close racing and building a deeper understanding of the #88 JForce. Every practice session, qualifying lap and race will contribute to that process.
Over time, RaceOne intends to grow into a platform that promotes driver development, teamwork, engineering excellence and wider participation in South African motorsport.
